Happy Yennayer 2975I would like to wish a Happy New Year 2975 to all Amazigh people around the world,  Asgas Ameggaz. May this new year bring peace, health, and prosperity to you and your families.

Take the time to celebrate this rich and vibrant culture by sharing a meal, passing on traditions, and honoring the Amazigh heritage, wherever you may be.

Happy Yennayer! Happy Amazigh New Year Asgas ameggaz (ⴰⵙⴳⴰⵙ ⴰⵎⴳⴰⵣ)

The Amazigh New Year, or Yennayer, is celebrated between January 12 and 14 and marks the first day of the Berber agrarian calendar. This holiday symbolizes the beginning of a new year linked to agricultural cycles and the fertility of the land. It is a time for family and community gatherings, where agricultural traditions and rites are honored.

In Algeria, Yennayer is particularly celebrated in Berber regions such as Kabylie, the Chaouia, and the M’zab, where agricultural and family customs are respected.

In Morocco, this celebration is widely observed in the High Atlas, Middle Atlas, and Souss regions, where Berber communities gather to share traditional meals, sing, and dance, while reaffirming their cultural heritage.

At Yennayer, each region has its own traditions and ancestral dishes to gather and celebrate the New Year. The most famous dish remains couscous, but each region prepares it in its own way, sometimes with chicken or lamb, and accompanies it with vegetables or legumes. These meals serve as a way to strengthen family and community bonds while honoring the culinary traditions specific to each territory.

Traditional Amazigh Dishes for Yennayer

At Yennayer, dishes like cherchem in Algeria or tagoula and ourkimen in Morocco can be found. For breakfast, depending on the tradition, baghrirs, sfeng, msemen, and other pancakes drizzled with butter and honey are served. A basket of dried fruits and candies is always present, adding sweetness and symbolizing prosperity for the year to come.

The Amazigh culture is very rich, and it is truly a pleasure to discover its history, traditions, and the customs of each country and Berber region. I would be delighted to learn about your traditions, especially if you continue the customs of your parents. Feel free to share the dishes you enjoy and those you have tasted, as each region has its own delights and specialties.

I wish you a very happy Yennayer, a wonderful year 2975, full and rich with everything you desire. Asggwas ameggaz! May this new year bring you joy, health, and prosperity!

Happy Amazigh New Year 2975
