The Dalgona Coffee is a type of cappuccino that has conquered the world. Originating from South Korea, this drink can be enjoyed hot or iced. It’s a whipped coffee prepared with only three ingredients, then mixed with milk. The result is a frothy drink that has become a true viral phenomenon on social media.
This trend has particularly gained buzz on TikTok. Dalgona Coffee, this frothy and airy coffee, was propelled in South Korea during lockdown.
As a big coffee lover, I was intrigued by this new trend and wanted to give it a try. It’s amazing to see that with just three ingredients, coffee, water, and sugar in equal parts, you can create a cream as dense and airy as whipped cream. Cappuccino lovers or fans of Starbucks’ macchiato, you’ll be won over!
I’m proposing three drinks to make with Dalgona Coffee: a frothy, machine-free, and economical coffee for a pure moment of pleasure.
After posting the recipe video on YouTube, I received several questions which I answer below.
Can any type of coffee be used?
No, you absolutely need instant coffee (soluble coffee). The brand doesn’t matter much.
Can instant cappuccino be used?
I don’t know, I haven’t tried it yet. If it already contains powdered milk, it probably won’t work.
Can it be made without sugar or with reduced sugar?
Yes, I tried it without sugar, and the foam did form, but not as well as with sugar. The taste is very bitter, so I wouldn’t recommend it unless you enjoy the bitterness of coffee. However, you can reduce the amount of sugar according to your preferences.
Can a manual whisk be used?
Yes, absolutely, but it takes some endurance! It’s like whipping egg whites, though a bit less tiring.
Can the Dalgona Coffee foam be stored in the refrigerator?
Yes, it can be stored covered for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. Beyond that, it starts to release water.
