Vitamin-Packed Non-Alcoholic Cocktail: Sangria
The history of sangria dates back to the Middle Ages, when wine was left to macerate with seasonal fruits and spices like cinnamon, vanilla, star anise, or cardamom. Over time, many variations emerged , including non-alcoholic sangria, for everyone to enjoy, both young and old!
This alcohol-free version is the perfect drink for your teens’ birthday buffets. Of course, for an aperitif with friends, you can always add a splash of wine. You can serve it alongside other drinks, like this mojito.
This non-alcoholic cocktail, also known as a mocktail, is truly delicious. It’s just the drink you need when you’re hosting a large gathering.
Whether it’s for the holidays, Christmas, a wedding, or Valentine’s Day, this sangria is sure to be a hit!

delicious sangria for alcohol-free cocktails
I truly love sangria! Its smooth, warm flavors are simply irresistible. I always prepare it with seasonal fruits and use sparkling mineral water, like Perrier, to make it lighter and more refreshing, just the way everyone likes it. You’re going to love this fruity cocktail!
Which wine should you use for sangria?
Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon are among the most popular choices. In English-speaking countries, brandy is often added for extra depth. For an alcohol-free version, you can substitute the wine with freshly squeezed or store-bought grape juice.
Fruit selection
You can use any seasonal fruit, but to make your sangria colorful and flavorful, some fruits are essential in my opinion. Choose fresh fruits with firm flesh, as they will need to macerate in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours.
- Black and red grapes or grape juice
- Oranges
- Pomegranate
- Red berries: blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, whatever you find.
- Peaches
- Nectarines
- Plums
- Pears
- Pineapple
- lemon
Should you add sugar?
Personally, I do, just a small amount of brown sugar. But you can skip it if you prefer; the natural sugars from the fruit might be enough. It also depends on how much sparkling water you plan to add to dilute the sangria.
What spices go into sangria?
Yes, you read that right ! Sangria traditionally includes cinnamon, ginger, and sometimes star anise, cardamom, or cloves. You can add all or just a few depending on your taste, but the blend of flavors is absolutely delicious.
Preparation Steps:
NB: Find the complete recipe with detailed ingredient quantities in the recipe card at the end of the article, which you can also print out. Below are the instructions, which you can also view in images. |
Start by preparing the homemade grape juice
Wash the red and black grapes, the peach, plums, and nectarine. Cut the fruits in half and remove the pits. Peel the fresh ginger.
Place all the chopped fruits, along with the pomegranate seeds and ginger, in a juicer to extract the juice.
If you don’t have a juicer, blend everything finely with a little water in a blender, then strain through a fine sieve to collect the juice.
You can also replace this homemade grape juice with 1/2 liter of store-bought grape juice mixed with 125 ml of peach juice and 125 ml of grenadine.
Of course, you can use only grape juice or combine it with either of the other juices.
Slice the lemon, clementine, and strawberries. Cut the orange into quarters, and chop the other fruits into small pieces. Leave a few quarters of the apple and peach whole.

Preparation sangria mocktail
Place all the cut fruits in a large bowl, then add the pomegranate seeds, raspberries, grape juice, and red fruit coulis.
Add the vanilla extract, cinnamon sticks, mint leaves, and 2 star anise. If using green anise, place the seeds in a strainer and suspend it over the sangria so the flavor infuses the juice without the seeds floating freely.
Sweeten to taste, keeping in mind that you’ll be adding sparkling water just before serving.
Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Sangria tastes best after resting for at least 24 hours.
Just before serving, add the sparkling water to the bowl.
Place a few ice cubes in each glass, pour in the sangria, and garnish with a lemon slice and a mint leaf.

Making sangria
What I love about sangria is how easily you can adapt it using whatever fruits and juices you have on hand. For a truly delicious sangria, grape juice, orange, red berries, and a hint of cinnamon are key.
I hope this refreshing mocktail inspires you to give it a try and share it with your family and friends!
